Common questions

How do I get a good room scan?

Put the iPhone or iPad where you sleep or work, at night if the noise is a night noise, and stay quiet for the 15 seconds. Scan again when something changes: a window open or shut, a new season, a new neighbour.

Does Umber record me?

No. During a scan the microphone signal is analysed on your device and discarded as it is analysed. Only eight numbers (the noise level in eight frequency bands) are kept, on your device. Nothing is ever sent anywhere.

The scan says the microphone is off.

Open Settings › Umber and turn on Microphone. Every other part of Umber works without it.

Is this noise cancelling?

No. Umber masks noise: it adds a sound shaped so the disturbing one stands out less. It does not cancel sound, and it is not a medical device.

The sound stops when I lock the phone.

It should keep playing. If it does not, check that another app has not taken over audio (a call, a video or a podcast), then start Umber again.

Is there really no loop?

Right. Every sound is computed sample by sample while you listen, so there are no recordings and no loop point.

How do I start a sound with Siri?

Say “Play my room in Umber”, “Play brown noise in Umber” or “Stop Umber”. The same actions appear in the Shortcuts app.

What does Umber cost?

Nothing to download, and there is nothing to buy inside. No ads, ever.
