Umber collects no data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party code. It never connects to the internet.
The microphone and the room scan
When you start a room scan, Umber uses the microphone for 15 seconds to measure the noise in your room. The sound goes straight into a frequency analysis on your device and is discarded as it is analysed: nothing is recorded, written to storage or sent anywhere. What remains is eight numbers, the level of the noise in eight frequency bands, which Umber keeps on your device so a saved room can play its masking noise again. The microphone is never used outside a scan you started, and never in the background. You can turn microphone access off at any time in Settings; everything except the scan keeps working.
What stays on your device
Your saved rooms (their names and the eight band levels of each scan), your last sound mix, the “mix with other audio” setting and a count of listening sessions (used only to decide when to ask once for an App Store rating) are stored locally on your device. They are never sent anywhere and are removed when you delete a room or the app.
Permissions
Umber asks for one: the microphone, only when you start a room scan. It asks for no camera, location, contacts, photos or notifications. Audio playback continues in the background so a sleep sound does not stop when the screen turns off.
Children
Umber contains no advertising, no links to purchases and collects nothing, so it is suitable for all ages.
